Shard of Light

January 7th to July 12th 2019

Shard of light is a game that was produced during my last study year. We was a team of 8 persons and we had no constraints, but had to make a vertical slice of a game under 6 months and had to use the scrum method.

The game itself is a puzzle game that is based around the light interaction with the environment. The player carry a shard of light in a lantern that he use to solve puzzle with, and explore the interior of a vast tree of life, vestige of a vanished civilization.

As I mentioned earlier, the entire gameplay of the game revolves around the shard of light inside the lantern that the player holds. With it he can perform two actions:

  • Spread light around the shard
  • Throw the shard away

This game was produced during my last study year. We was a team of 8 persons and we had no constraints, but had to make a vertical slice of a game under 6 months and had to use the scrum method.

Overall, creating Shard of Light was a tough achievement in which we had to deal with many social and technical problems  but in the end, it was a very enriching experience and I learned many things by working so much time, with such a large team.

Resume of my work

Design

  • Game Design
    • Define the game design rules and the high level concept with the design team
    • Make powerpoint presentations to present my ideas and those of the design team to the entire team.
    • Prototype game mechanics ideas
    • Organize several playtest sessions, inform the team of the results, then adjust the design according to them.
  • Level design
    • Conceptualize a puzzle with the elements already developed
    • Building the puzzle in unity and playtest it.
    • Working with environment artists to dress it up

Development

  • Programming
    • Develop the 3C’s in collaboration with the other programmer
    • Develop the overall behavior of light in gameplay as well as all of its interactions
    • Develop systemic gameplay elements
    • Integrate the main character’s animations as well as various 3D props
    • Develop level making and debugging tools
  • Art
    • Create every particle system effects needed for the game
    • Code various image effect and surface shaders in shaderlab language

Context

The game takes place in the tree of life, the vestige of your civilization . The light emitted by this tree was the source of all life and energy of your people.

But one day, dark monsters appeared and invaded the tree, absorbing all of its light and killing all its inhabitants… Except you. You made it through and managed to conserve the last ounce of power from the tree of life. The last shard of light.

You will now have to use it to kick the monsters out of your house, and bring light and life back inside.
